A failing septic system doesn't usually give you much notice — but it does give you some. Most homeowners who end up with a serious and expensive septic problem had weeks or months of warning signs they either missed or ignored.
1. Slow Drains Throughout the House
A single slow drain is usually a clog in that fixture's individual line. But if drains are slow throughout the house — multiple sinks, toilets, and showers — that's a sign of a problem further down, most likely in the septic system itself.
2. Sewage Odors
You should never be able to smell your septic system inside your home or in your yard. Odors that smell like sewage near the tank, drain field, or inside the house are a red flag.
3. Gurgling Sounds
If you hear gurgling in your pipes after flushing or running the washing machine, that's a sign wastewater isn't draining properly into or through the tank.
4. Wet Spots Over the Drain Field
Soggy ground, standing water, or a patch of grass that's notably greener over your drain field means effluent is surfacing instead of absorbing. This happens when the drain field is saturated or has failed.
5. Sewage Backup
Raw sewage backing up into your toilets, showers, or floor drains means wastewater has nowhere to go. This requires immediate attention.
6. Aerobic System Alarm
If you have an aerobic system, a sounding alarm means the control panel has detected a problem. Don't silence it and ignore it. Note any error codes and call your service provider.
What to Do
First, reduce water use in the home immediately. Then call a licensed septic contractor for an assessment. Do not use septic additives — these don't fix structural problems and can interfere with diagnosis. Some of these problems are simple fixes; others are more involved. The only way to know is a proper diagnosis.
